Evros, with a population of approximately 150,580 (2005) and an area of 4,242 km2, is one of the largest prefectures of Greece (and the largest in the region of Thrace), covering over 45% of Western Thrace. Evros is characterised by the variety of its landscapes: the mountainous Rhodope, the internationally acknowledged important wetland of the Evros Delta, the Evros River itself and its surrounding plains, the Dadia forest, the seashores of southern Evros etc. Furthermore, Evros, by being a crossroad of several civilisations (ancient Greek tribes, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans etc) and societies (Christian, Muslim and others) for centuries, has been shaped not only by the astonishing nature around it but also by culture, whose traces are evident throughout Evros.
