The handbook of the intergenerational educational program “Story on a Plate II” is now available in digital format! “Story on a Plate II” is a comprehensive intergenerational program where the kitchen—seen as a shared space—and the hands-on process of creating dishes and sharing stories bring together primary school children and older adults, often of grandparent age. This interaction opens up a space for meaningful exchange, giving value to the flavors of the past and the stories they carry.
The program successfully highlighted the value of Messinian gastronomy and bridged two generations. The core principles, and guidance for further implementation are gathered in a dedicated curriculum.
The handbook is available (in Greek) online here.
The program design draws from tools used in theatrical play and brings past stories to life through an imaginative reality show format. It explores the importance of traditional diets in relation to harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, uncovers traces of traditional recipes deep in the past, and emphasizes the importance of what both generations have to share and offer each other.
The handbook aims to guide anyone working with, coordinating, or facilitating groups of children, without requiring prior knowledge of Messinian gastronomy. Its structure includes all the necessary steps for implementing the program, along with useful information to support the group facilitator in enriching both their understanding and the application of the program. Additionally, the individual steps of the program are flexible and can be adapted to suit any other gastronomic tradition.
A warm thank you to our partners at WoodGear, whose creativity and innovative ideas shaped the graphic design of the manual!
The program was piloted in December 2024 in Pylos, implemented by MedINA with the donation and care of the Captain Vassilis and Carmen Konstantakopoulos Foundation in cooperation with the Marathopolis Cultural Association and the 10th Primary School of Kalamata.
