Activists win battle, not war, against hydropower in the Western Balkans

The Blue Heart of Europe is still threatened by hydropower. Green lawmakers have hailed the cancellation of the hydropower plant in Kalivaç, Albania, but now fear that a forthcoming EU investment package for the Western Balkans will promote small hydropower.

Investing in small hydropower projects goes –inter alia- against the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, which aims to restore at least 25,000 km of rivers into free-flowing ones.

“We should and must not use European investment funding to destroy those rivers”, says Gabriel Schwaderer from our partner EuroNatur.
