MedINA is delighted to present the Aoos River Ichthyofauna Identification Guide, a tool to explore the richness of this iconic river and its importance to the ecosystem.
The Aoos River is a natural treasure of Epirus and Greece. It originates in the Pindos Mountain range, flows north through breathtaking landscapes, and joins its tributaries, Voidomatis and Sarantaporos. Crossing the border into Albania, it becomes the Vjosa river and completes its 270 km journey in the Adriatic Sea.
The Aoos/Vjosa and its tributaries are among Europe’s most significant river ecosystems, hosting rare biodiversity and supporting the well-being of local communities. Among its most fascinating inhabitants are its fish species. Greece is home to over 130 native freshwater species, one-third of which are endemic. The Aoos hosts 12 native species, six of which can be found in Greece exclusively in Aoos River basin!
For more than a decade, MedINA has been working tirelessly to preserve the natural flow and ecological health of the Aoos River. Through collaboration with local and national stakeholders, MedINA aims to establish robust protection for the river and its tributaries, ensuring their sustainability for future generations.
About the Guide
In the Guide, you’ll find:

- Information about their habitats, threats, and the legal framework for fishing.
The Guide was created by MedINA as part of the projects “Ri-Connect: The Aoos River as a Transboundary Ecological Corridor” and “Aoos/Vjosa: Saving the Last Free-Flowing River in Europe”, supported by the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT) and Holdfast Collective.
