Let’s meet the Eurasian otter!
A flagship species and a top predator of Europe’s freshwater ecosystems.
The Eurasian otter is a Near Threatened species according to the IUCN Red List.
Greece is considered to host one of the healthiest otter populations in Europe. In a recent study conducted in the Aoos river basin, signs of this elusive and nocturnal animal were found all along the main course of Aoos river and its tributaries Sarantaporos and Voidomatis!
Ιn Greece, one of the biggest threats to its survival and wellbeing is the looming construction of hydropower plants along much of its riverine habitat.
The study on the Eurasian otter was conducted by Pindos Perivallontiki and Greek scientists, in the framework of the project ‘Saving one of Europe’s last free flowing wild river – Vjosa/Aoos’.
