What do dinosaurs, unicorns, and the Andromeda Galaxy have to do with the local tradition of Lemnos? The answer lies in creative writing! On the occasion of International Children’s Book Day, MedINA presents the digital publication “Heroes by Nature”, featuring short stories written by students of Moudros Middle School on the island of Lemnos, as part of the intergenerational environmental programme of the same name.
The stories in the collection move between reality and fantasy, drawing inspiration from narratives shared by older members of the local community of Lemnos. Filled with humour and surrealism, these stories explore historical and traditional elements of the island, as well as the natural and cultural losses it has experienced. The protagonists, unicorns making traditional flomaria pasta, descendants of kings working in scrapyards, roosters boarding spaceships, and solitary cotton plants, demonstrate how children’s imagination can bridge the past with the present. Elements from Lemnos’ recent history, such as migration, species extinction, and the abandonment of cultivation, are creatively highlighted through the perspective of adolescents.
At the core of the “Heroes by Nature” programme lies the idea that members of local communities hold valuable traditional knowledge, which can be explored by younger generations through creative means. The tools chosen for this exploration are ethnographic research and creative writing, which have the power to raise awareness about the relationship between humans and nature.
Students of Moudros Middle School were invited to document aspects of Lemnos’ past by conducting in-depth interviews with beneficiaries of the Kaminia Day Care Centre for the Elderly. They then processed their material through discussions with scientists and, finally, through a dedicated creative writing workshop led by children’s book author Miranda Vatikioti, transformed their research into original short stories.
This series of stories offers a small window into the past for the future. Through this creative process, the memories of older generations were transformed into contemporary narratives. Through the eyes of the younger generation, tradition is not simply reproduced but creatively redefined.
