On March 9, 2025, MedINA installed the first water-level monitoring sensor at the main intervention stream (Rema Taxiarchis Skafis) of the CARDIMED project on Sifnos!
The sensor was placed under the bridge connecting Kamares with Apollonia, at the point where the stream flows before being channeled into the Kamares stream. It will measure water levels in real time, contributing to the monitoring of hydrological conditions and the early detection of flood events.
As part of the project, 120 traditional dry-stone weirs will be constructed in the coming months to improve water resource management, reduce flood risk, and enhance biodiversity in the area.
Additionally, the project team will install more sensors in wells across the study area and at the second intervention stream (Rema Tris Piges). This initiative will support the early detection of potential issues and provide critical data for effective water resource management, contributing to the support of small-scale agriculture on the island.
The CARDIMED (Climate Adaptation and Resilience Demonstrated in the MEDiterranean region) project, with a total budget of 19,971,411.20 euros, is funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe 2021-2027. The lead partner is the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens and MedINA is one of the 53 implementing partners.
