A group of MedINA’s associates, accompanied by the President of the Board of Directors of the organisation, Ivi Nanopoulou, had the pleasure of presenting to the new municipal authority of Lemnos MedINA’s work on the island of Lemnos. Alexis Katsaros, MedINA’s Executive Director, summarized the organisation’s approach, vision and actions, since the implementation of its first programme on the island, while Rigas Zafeiriou, Sustainable Food Systems Programme Manager, presented the 8 programmes currently being implemented on Lemnos.

Special mention was made of traditional mandras and sheep pens, exploring their potential reuse, as well as the preservation of the unique Lemnian rural landscape. Discussions also included topics such as how to support production and certify quality local products, the integration of tourism and agrifood, and the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship in Lemnos’ rural areas. Finally, ways of mutual and beneficial collaboration between the two sides were explored, aiming at the maximum empowerment of the local community.

The municipality was represented by Mayor Eleonora Georga, the Deputy Mayor for Education, Lifelong Learning, Culture, and Sports Julia Lygda, the President of the Tourist Cooperative Mando Papoulka-Garofallidi, the President of the Municipality’s Board of Directors Triantafyllos Katis, as well as the appointed Municipal Advisor for Agricultural Development Charalambos Skapetis.

We warmly thank the Municipality of Lemnos for their hospitality and we hope for many meaningful collaborations on critical issues concerning the protection and promotion of Lemnos’ natural and cultural capital.
