In the framework of Kosmos’s monthly meetings, that are taking place every last Thursday of the month and are dedicated in one of the 17 goals of Sustainable Development (SDGs), MedINA was invited by the Member of the European Parliament, Mr. Petros Kokkalis, in order to present the case of Aoos river, in Epirus.
The webinar was committed to the 2nd SD Target: ‘End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture’, and intended to highlight the basic elements of the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 as well as to promote best practice examples exercised by Member States.
The conservation status of Aoos river up to this day –an almost untouched ecosystem by human activity– was presented as a best practice example for the implementation of one of the Strategy’s objectives, that is to restore the natural functions of 25,000 km of European rivers, i.e. To remove or adapt barriers, such as dams, and give back to the rivers their official identity of free-flowing ones.
