Vovousa Festival is an annual event that takes place in the village of Vovousa in Northern Pindos. This year it will take place from 14 to 21 of July and will present an interesting and varied programme, with workshops, concerts, exhibitions and other activities. MedINA in collaboration with INHERIT, the Management Body of Vikos-Aoos and Pindos, Pindos Perivallontiki and the Vjosa / Aoos River Ecomuseum will host a special feature of the photographic exhibition “On the Move” titled “On The Move|Faces”.
“On the Move” was created in the framework of the Mediterranean Consortium for Nature and Culture and its project on transhumance and nomadic pastoralism in the Mediterranean, funded by the MAVA Foundation. The exhibition hosts photographs of six talented Mediterranean photographers; Stamos Abatis from Greece, Baris Korca from Turkey, Yunes Tazi from Morocco, Wassim Ghozlani from Tunisia, Assad Saleh from Lebanon and Gemma Arrugaeta from Spain. Through their photographs they manage to portray the challenging lives of the remaining transhumant and nomadic shepherds in the Mediterranean and to raise awareness on the importance of preserving and even reviving this practice.
‘On the Move’ began its journey at the Bardo Museum in Tunis, and has since visited 12 locations across the Mediterranean and beyond, raising awareness as it goes on the environmental, historical. In Greece, this is the exhibition’s third visit, having been hosted in 2015 in the Averoff Museum in Metsovo and the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens. Especially for the Vovousa Festival, the exhibition will feature only the portraits of the mobile pastoralist; the people that despite the hardships they face, still follow centuries old routes, giving life to the amazing villages of Pindos, as to many other corners of the Mediterranean. The exhibition opens on Saturday 14th July and will be hosted in three different spaces around the picturesque and remote village of Vovousa.
