Protect and restore critical ecosystems

Our goal is to safeguard the land and water on which communities depend by ensuring healthy ecosystems for a sustainable future for all.

When ecosystems are damaged the consequences ripple outwards through our natural environments, economies and societies. The critical importance of ecosystem restoration has been recognised globally, with the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) and a European policy level commitment to protect biodiversity and restore at least 20% of degraded ecosystems across the EU by 2030.

We focus on freshwater ecosystems that are the lifeblood of communities and underpin biodiversity and agroecosystems that provide food security and encompass the deep relationship between people and land. We collaborate with knowledge holders to advance and consolidate scientific knowledge, we share it with communities and enrich it with traditional knowledge, we advocate for the protection and restoration of ecosystems and aim to apply concrete conservation actions that benefit nature and communities and can serve as examples of the actions that need to be scaled up to safeguard these ecosystems for future generations.

Foster awareness and positive action

Our goal is to inspire positive attitudes and individual and collective action towards safeguarding our land, water and heritage.

Ecosystem degradation and the disconnect between people and nature that’s common to modern life contribute to our failing relationship with the natural world. At the same time, the erosion of ecosystems leads to the erosion of cultural traditions that keep communities together. Culture is key in restoring our connection with nature approach by fostering a sense of appreciation, respect and stewardship.

We work locally to inspire and involve a diverse range of people – from farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs to school students and local grassroots organisations – in conservation efforts that are focused on sustainable freshwater management, food systems and cultural practices. We use our communication tools to raise national and international awareness about the importance of ecosystems and cultural heritage for community well-being and we embrace culture as a means to re-establish the connection between people and nature.
