Throwback Post – Denmark 2008

Another important moment for MedINA, in May 2008 in Denmark, with the WWF Conservation Merit Awards ceremony during the annual WWF conference.

Thymio Papayannis receives an honorary award, for his lifelong commitment to nature conservation and his contribution to the preservation of wetlands in the Mediterranean.

In this wonderful picture, in May 2008 we can see Thymio Papayannis who has just received an award with his long-time colleague, companion, and friend, Luc Hoffmann. Luc Hoffmann (1923-2016), an environmentalist, ornithologist, and philanthropist, was a prominent figure. He co-founded WWF, helped to establish the Ramsar Convention for the protection of wetlands, created the Tour du Valat research centre in France and was instrumental, along with Thymio Papayannis, in the establishment of the Society for the Protection of Prespa in 1991. In 1994 he founded the MAVA Foundation, which funded numerous nature conservation activities in the Mediterranean, West Africa and the Alps for 3 decades.

Luc Hoffman’s contribution to the environmental conservation movement has been defining at the very least.
