How can two countries work together effectively to manage a shared, precious ecosystem? This key question is at the heart of the Transboundary River Forum (TRF), which focuses on the Aoos/Vjosa River, one of the last wild rivers in Europe.
The Transboundary River Forum is organised by MedINA, between 24–27 September in Ioannina and Konitsa, in collaboration with EuroNatur and EcoAlbania, within the framework of the international campaign Save the Blue Heart of Europe, and under the auspices of the University of Ioannina. The aim of the Forum is to strengthen the recognition of the Aoos/Vjosa as a shared resource that transcends borders and connects people, while also highlighting the importance of transboundary management of valuable ecosystems, drawing on experiences from other cases in Greece and Europe. For the first time in Greece, scientists, academics, institutions, local government representatives, and civil society organisations will come together to exchange knowledge and seek solutions for managing challenges through joint action. The TRF is open to the public.
During the three-day event, participants from Greece, Albania, and across Europe will discuss prospects for the protection and sustainable management of the river. Discussions will focus on the need to preserve the river’s free flow and on the creation of Europe’s first Transboundary Wild River Park, the Aoos/Vjosa. At the same time, participatory activities will take place in Konitsa, including visits to the Voidomatis and Sarantaporos rivers—tributaries of the Aoos—and activities that bring people closer to the river, highlighting its shared environmental, cultural, and social value.
The event will conclude on Saturday, 27 September, with a major concert-celebration in Konitsa’s Central Square, under the auspices of the Municipality of Konitsa. Foivos Delivorias will present his summer performance “Chartis” (Map) and sing for the Aoos/Vjosa, on the occasion of World Rivers Day.
Protecting the Aoos/Vjosa is not only an environmental issue. It is a shared responsibility, and at the same time the most important opportunity for cooperation in safeguarding river ecosystems as a whole.
