“Heroes by Nature” is an intergenerational programme of educational activities. The programme focuses on creative writing and the power of literature to raise awareness and motivate people for environmental protection and the invaluable, undocumented local ecological knowledge of the elderly.

Set on the island of Lemnos, it targets teenagers in creative interaction with a group of older members of the local community, thereby promoting innovative activities of creative and artistic innovation in rural areas.

This is a cross-sectoral programme designed by the interdisciplinary team of MedINA with expertise innatural sciences, social and human sciences, arts, and pedagogy.

The design of the programme rests on three pillars:
a) Nature and Environment
b) Intergenerational Interaction and Inclusion
c) Creative Writing and Literature

GOAL

The goal of “Heroes by Nature” is the interactive engagement of two distinct generations through the creative medium of storytelling about the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. It also explores creative writing as a means of research, enrichment of ecological knowledge, and its presentationthrough art.

OBJECTIVES

  • Interaction between teenagers and older people focused on memories of life in nature
  • Familiarization of teenagers with literature and contemporary artistic creation
  • Raising teenagers’ awareness of environmental issues
  • Raising teenagers’ awareness regarding the vulnerable social group of older people and bridging the generation gap
  • Access to scientific knowledge (through MedINA’s scientists)
  • Enhancing research and analytical thinking skills
  • Inclusion and empowerment of a vulnerable social group, such as the elderly, in a creative process
